How did we choose?
Inkjet printers, facing laser printers, have the disadvantage of being less durable and sometimes less economical. But they do a much better job of color printing.
Given the variety of models available, here are some key points to check before buying an inkjet printer:
- Image Quality: a printer must print perfectly texts and graphics but especially photos and other image files on dedicated papers, under a good resolution and a faithful colorimetry.
- Throughput: This is the number of pages your printer can print per minute. The best printers have a speed of up to 15 pages per minute in color and 19 pages in black and white.
- The cost per page: It is the average cost of printing a standard page, whether in color or black and white. It can vary greatly from one printer to another. A printer with a higher purchase cost can be much more profitable over time because of its low cost per page.
- The Scanner and the Copy: The stake is to know if it is multifunctional or not. Models that do not have these features are dedicated to photo printing or printing in specific sizes, such as the A3. Regarding copying, make sure your printer is able to offer you as close to the original as possible.
- Ergonomics: This criterion includes connectivity and more particularly the provision of a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet port. But also, its screen which ideally wants to be tactile and in color. In addition, the capacity of the tray will be important and you will avoid (or not) often having to reload. This last point is especially interesting for those who want to make great prints.
- Formats Supported: The format will be important according to your desires. Few printers practice A3 printing, but more expensive models often offer this option. Otherwise, the most classic form includes all formats up to A4 (A5, B5, DL, C6, and A6).
- The Design: A compact size is often more appreciated, with a lower weight to facilitate its transport. But also, the pretty finishes can give a decorative “plus”.
With the statement of these criteria, we have been able to pre-select a dozen of more than 30 existing models on the current market.
The best Cheap Inkjet Printers 2020
While being below the $150 budget here are two models that provide the best value for money.
On the contrary, they display correct print quality with respectable speed.
On the design side, the Canon Pixma TS6150 is rather compact, with its 31.5 x 13.9 x 37.2 cm that will allow you to place it easily even on a small desk. With its matte black coating and curved shapes, it will bring a touch of elegance while being discreet.
Even so, the rear tray holds up to 20 sheets of photo paper or 100 sheets of plain paper. The front cassette can hold up to 100 sheets of plain paper.
The printer has a color touch screen, which includes shortcut buttons. Its interface remains very simple.
It is a connected printer: you can connect it to your tablet or smartphone (it is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows 10 Mobile), whether via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Just then download the application and you can launch your print remotely or browse the Pixma Cloud.
It also acts as a scanner with a resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi. The scanning speed is approximately 14 seconds.
For printing, this model is capable of delivering prints up to 4800 x 1200 dpi. It has five individual ink tanks, for black and four basic colors. In terms of speed, you will print about 10-15 pages per minute and for photos, it takes about 37 seconds for a standard size 10 x 15 cm.
The printer supports automatic two-sided printing for A4 as well as A5, B5, letter and plain paper.
The life of the ink cartridges can vary greatly depending on the type of cartridges you choose and the color of them. A Cyan cartridge holds only about 80 sheets while a black XXL cartridge can print more than 1000 sheets (in black and white).
Only a small shadow on the board: the record lacks some details to explain the process of digitization to novices.
But other than that, it’s an excellent printer that should satisfy most users with its sleek design, print speed and intuitive interface that makes it fun to use.
HP Envy 4520 – Wireless All-in-One Photo Printer
The design of the HP Envy 4520 has been treated with beautiful finishes with rounded edges for a fairly compact size (44.4 x 35 x 11 cm). Its weight is greater than 5 kg. Compared to other printers, it is not huge but for its size, it is still quite heavy.
It has a large bin with a capacity of about 1000 sheets. Its control screen measuring 5.5 cm diagonal is tactile, but not in color.
You can print from a computer, tablet, smartphone, email, Airprint or Google Cloud Print. Wi-Fi is available but if you prefer, there is also Ethernet and NFC. Nevertheless, the USB cable is not supplied.
It is a 3-in-1 multifunction printer because, in addition to printing, it scans and photocopies your documents. Although a little noisy, its print is quality with a resolution of 1200 x 1200 px in black and white and 4800 x 1200 pp in color.
We also highlight its good printing speed. You will get 20 pages per minute in black and white, and 9.5 pages per minute in color.
Finally, know that it prints on both sides and in different formats. This goes up to the A4 and therefore includes the A5, A6, B5, C6, and DL.
In summary, this printer 3-in-1, for its price, has a tray with a large capacity, a speed of appreciable printing and attractive connectivity as a design worked. Its print quality is reflected in its great success on the market and ensures its reliability.
The best Mid Range Inkjet Printers
In this category, for a cost between $150 and $300, here are the printers that should make the happiness of individuals (but will still often insufficient for small businesses).
Here, we find superior print quality and improved speed to combine efficiency and speed.
This printer is a real guarantee of quality but comes in a rather bulky format (63.75 x 46.74 x 43.69 cm) and heavy (16 kg) making it more difficult to transport.
In terms of capacity, it can accommodate up to 250 sheets in its loading tray and 50 sheets in its automatic feeder.
Ergonomics side, you will be served since it embeds a color touch screen 6.8 cm and many buttons for easy access to its menus.
Several applications such as iPrint & Scan, Apple AirPrint or Google Cloud Print take care of the management of your documents from your smartphone or tablet. Plus, no need to go through a router, the printer has a wireless connection and Wi-Fi Direct, and access to cloud services (Google Drive, Dropbox) makes printing easier.
This device is multifunctional (4-in-1) and serves as a printer but also fax photocopier and scanner. You can print up to A3 size and copy, scan or fax up to A4 size. It is also possible to print on thicker paper such as envelopes via the manual introducer to avoid any risk of jamming.
But it is especially at the speed of printing that it is interesting: it rises up to 22 ppm (pages per minute) in black and white and 20 ppm in color. In other words, you can output a page in 6 seconds.
Lastly, on the autonomy side, it works with high capacity consumables, which can print up to 3000 pages for black cartridges and up to 1500 pages for color cartridges.
In the end, this printer is efficient and intuitive, justifying its use in a small company. It excels in office because it can print in different formats and with great speed. It’s not for nothing that it’s so popular on the market.
The least we can say is that HP has highlighted the design of this printer. Its look is primarily minimalist (38.9 x 24.6 x 9.1 cm) and modern with glossy finishes that bring a touch of elegance to your interior.
The consequence of this compactness is undoubtedly the small capacity of the bins that allow you to house only 50 sheets. It is definitely a printer for domestic use and restricted.
Nevertheless, users are disappointed with the lack of a control screen. Fortunately, the HP Smart app is very intuitive and makes the printer easy to use from a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Another amazing point is its lack of connectivity: HP has made the bet here for all Wi-Fi dual-band, and the printer does not even present even a USB port. So you better benefit from a strong and reliable connection.
This printer is used to print, scan or copy files. The possibility of sharing by email or via the cloud is also possible.
Regarding quality, there is no doubt with clear and contrasting prints. The flow reaches the honorable score of 15 ppm for black and white and 12.5 ppm for color. For photo printing, it takes an average of 1.25 minutes for a print 10 x 15 cm. These shots enjoy a faithful reproduction of colors.
The cost per page, without being very high, is far from being the most interesting on the market (€ 0.13 / page, compared to an average of € 0.10 / page), although, again, savings can be performed by purchasing the XXL cartridges. HP has clearly focused its campaign on its program Instant Ink, then offering you, through a subscription, to print your photos up to a size of 13 × 18 cm without being deducted from your monthly package.
Finally, the energy side, it should be noted that it is not the least greedy standby, but it is surprisingly little greedy to use.
In the end, this little printer focuses on the design and its wireless connectivity. Excellent in office automation, rather good in photo printing, it is nevertheless those who use it with the Instant Ink program (and therefore have a print volume large enough to make it profitable) that will find the most their account.
Best High-End Inkjet Printers to buy in 2020:
To further increase the quality of printing, it will be necessary to aim higher in your budget and to exceed $300.
Two models are quite similar but come from different brands. We chose them for their quietness as well as their lower page cost.
Brother MFC J895DW – All-in-One Inkjet Printer
With its white/gray design and its odd shape, this printer is not particularly eye-catching to future buyers. It nevertheless has the advantage of being relatively compact (34.1 x 43.5 x 19.5 cm).
It has three paper cassette trays: a 150-sheet main tray, a 20-sheet automatic tray, and a 10×15 cm photo tray that holds 20 sheets. Already at this level, we see that the Brother brand has shown concern for its ergonomics.
The 6.8 cm color touch screen and the buttons on the right side allow you to make your adjustments. Its connectivity is very complete: Wi-Fi, Ethernet port, NFC, while being compatible with many services such as Cloud and Apple AirPrint.
The quality of printing is not in doubt when one sees the excellent rendering in office automation and the satisfaction of the users vis-à-vis the photos. It also acts as a scanner, photocopier and fax machine.
Its printing speed is 10 ppm in black and white, and 12 ppm in color, which remains correct. Side photo, it takes almost 2 minutes for a standard size 10 x 15 cm. This template can print documents up to A4 size (21 x 29.7 cm).
Side cost per page, this printer is in an average (very) low: with XL cartridges of the brand (which allow printing from 5000 to 6000 pages approximately), you can reach the cost of 0.021 € only! Admittedly, the printer is a higher basic investment than previous models, but it is really profitable in the long run.
Energy consumption side, it is in the average, as the sound level since it remains below 50 dB.
In the end, here is a printer that has almost no defects, except its average design and printing speed that will probably not be large enough to satisfy companies. As for individuals who print often, they will be very satisfied with its print quality and its cost per page.
This 3-in-1 model is one of the best products under this budget and provides best value for money along with its elegant design and amazing Print Quality.
In terms of design, the Canon Pixma 9150 appears in a compact format. This time, the curvaceous corners give way to a more square shape, and a shiny coating.
A loading tray that can accommodate up to 100 sheets is available at the front, but you can also deploy another in the back as needed (convenient if you want to work on various formats).
It is equipped with a color touch screen which, once again, offers an easy and fluid interface, in agreement with the dedicated application.
In terms of connectivity, in addition to its Wi-Fi connection, it includes an Ethernet port and an SD card reader on the front, allowing you to launch prints directly from a memory card. Of course, it also supports leading cloud printing services.
The resolution of its scanner is up to 4800 x 2400 dpi and scanning takes an average of ten seconds. For the copy, it takes 11 seconds for production in black and white and 13 seconds for the color. Regarding the photo, the brand announces 17 seconds even if, in fact, users report a little longer time. On the print side, it reaches 15 ppm in black and white and 10 ppm in color. These are convincing values and in any case, the rendering is excellent!
Its cost per page is correct, despite the fact that the printer launches a little too often the cleaning of the heads, causing a certain waste of the ink.
By cons, good news, it is energy efficient, and most importantly, very quiet (less than 40 dB in intensive use).
In the end, here is an excellent little printer that acts as a scanner and copier, while offering an excellent result, and all with a consumption (energy and ink) very correct and rather fast flow.
Canon Pixma TS8150: This is the model that predates the TS9150 and has many similarities. It differs mainly by a smaller screen and the absence of an Ethernet port, while it uses another range of cartridges, but the cost of which is very similar. As it is older, it is nevertheless offered at a more affordable price, which may lead you to prefer the TS9150 but its characteristics are still less advanced.
HP Envy 7640: This multifunction printer offers fast print speeds of 14 ppm in black and white for 9 ppm in color. In addition to being silent, it has a good resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. Otherwise, it has Wi-Fi and serves as fax. However, its users depreciate the low capacity of its tray (only 100 sheets) and its photo quality, which leaves something to be desired.
Conclusion – Which Inkjet Printer to Choose?
In our opinion, the best quality/price ratio is offered by Brother MFC J895DW. It is interesting if you print a lot. In addition, it has a low cost on the page that offsets its significant initial investment. Moreover, the quality is at the rendezvous (construction, ergonomics, quality of printing, including in photo).
Among the lowest prices, the best option is the Canon Pixma TS6150, which has no major flaws, and offers the right performance in all areas and more precisely in printing speed.
Finally, the Brother MFC-J5330DW allows you to print in A3 format and an exemplary speed. Despite its size, its high capacity ink cartridges avoid changes too recurrently. Its printing speed is also admirable.
