Best Cheap Scanners 2020
In entry-level, it is often necessary to turn to models that are getting older, which allows benefiting from a reduced cost.
We have found two models that are efficient and fast despite their low prices.
The first device in this selection is a scrolling scanner. And although it lacks some important features in our opinion (like the document loader), it is a machine of choice. This is evident by its popularity in English-speaking countries.
It is heavier than some portable models but it remains light (500 g). It is long, thin and compact and measures 29.21 cm long, 6.6 cm wide and 4.1 cm thick. This is its multifunctional USB 2.0 cable that is used to power and connect the machine.
It works with software like Nuance OmniPage 18 (for OCR), Power PDF for converting and processing this format, and PaperPort for document management. By cons, each of these software is among the best in its class, and buying licenses individually could quickly cost more than the device itself.
The use is not the most practical since it is a manual scanner requiring the placement of documents. However, its performance is admirable in terms of scanning speed. Indeed, each sheet can be scanned in 300 dpi in about 8 seconds (4 seconds in 150 dpi).
In terms of resolution, you get an 8-bit output for grayscale, 1-bit for monochrome and 24-bit output for color output. It accepts double-sided media up to A4 size and different types of paper such as plain paper, photo or laminated.
All in all, for a modest price, the Visioneer RoadWarrior 4D offers not only front-to-back support but also one of the fastest performances on the market. It has a satisfactory battery which, despite a weight a little higher than that of some competitors, retains good transportability. If you are looking for a low-cost scroll scanner that works with competitive software, it’s a great choice.
The Canoscan is a 2014 model, which the graphic features and finishes have made timeless for occasional use. Its ergonomics greatly contributed to its success.
While most flatbed scanners take up a lot of space on a desk, the LiDE 220 can be mounted on a wall vertically. However, this configuration is a bit more complicated when it comes to scanning books or larger documents. Better then tilt the device.
It is also one of the finest available on the market, with a thickness of only 4 cm for dimensions of 25 x 36.5 cm and a weight of 1.6 kg. In addition, like many modern scanners, everything goes through the USB cable (including its power supply), showing a limitation in cable management. Its finishes have been neat to bring a touch of elegance on its support or wall.
Other than that, its software includes a suite including My Image Garden, the Canon license in which we find an OCR and a PDF exporter but there is no photo editing software. In addition, the presence of Evernote gives you the ability to send scanned documents directly to the cloud.
The LiDE 220 is simple to use and several shortcuts allow you to scan via a physical button or from the utility. Count fifteen seconds to scan a page because you have to bring every time the scan head to its original position.
The image quality is sufficient to meet almost everyone (except the most demanding), with its resolution of 4800 dpi. You can set the type of document from its intuitive interface, either through a “basic” menu or an “expert” menu, rather reserved for graphic work.
It is then possible to adjust the resolution, contrast, and brightness to improve the image. In addition, the “color-restore” does a very good job in rebalancing the colorimetry of photos. In this regard, the quality of the photos is very good, although it is not in this area that it excels (but we expect it in this price range).
This model is suitable for those who favor a beautiful ergonomics while maintaining the correct quality of the scan. This device is versatile and easy to use. Its settings and intuitive menus contribute to its success and make it a basic but effective scanner.
Best Mid Range Scanners 2020
By increasing your budget, you discover even more ergonomic devices with shortcuts or programmable buttons.
So you have the choice here between a scrolling model with good connectivity and a wired scanner with a higher resolution.
In this selection, we wanted to find a scrolling scanner with a document feeder, but without exploding your budget. Here is the Brother ADS-1700W which is much newer on the market.
At the format level, we remain here on a relatively compact scrolling model. It measures 10.3 x 30 x 8.3 cm and weighs 1.5 kg. It can be stored quite easily on a desk without taking up all the space.
From a connector point of view, you can either connect via USB 3.0 or benefit from its wireless connection since it has Wi-Fi.
Even if the software is not the most intuitive on the market, you can practice scanning to send it on PC, USB, on a connected device or via email. It is one of the Best Scanners of 2020.
Nevertheless, its use is simplified thanks to its 7.1 cm color touch screen, from which it is possible to program up to 20 shortcuts. The automatic scanning feature makes it much easier for you to start processing itself through a document detection system. The maximum speed is pointed at 25 pages per minute.
You can also protect certain information by limiting the functions and access to certain users, thus showing the first indication of its target audience: businesses and other professional circles. However, it can also be useful at home, if you have children for example.
The quality is present thanks to its native resolution of 600 dpi and the possibility to make corrections (adjustment of the grayscale, removal of punches). It is all the more practical that it admits plasticized documents as well as driver’s license, business card or identity card.
In conclusion, Brother ADS-1700W combines mobility and performance. Its personalized use, its large number of functions, its quality of scanning, its Wi-Fi connection and its multiple possibilities of security make it a competitive model that will appeal especially to the companies.
Given its popularity and reliability on the market, we could not establish this comparison without telling you about the Perfection V550 offered by the Japanese brand Epson. To locate you, it is more powerful than the Epson V370 but less than the Epson Perfection V600.
Due to its large size (11.7 x 28.4 x 48.5 cm), it requires a larger work area. On the other hand, its design is appreciated for its simplicity but its connectivity does not reap the same success since it only works via USB 2.0.
Many software will be useful and practical, including Photo Scan application, which is intended for photos. It also allows you to make adjustments to improve or correct your shots in terms of colorimetry and brightness. The images are thus sharper and detailed and can be shared directly on Facebook.
This model is easy to use thanks to four customizable buttons (PDF, email, copy and start). There are also four modes (Full Auto, Home, Office and Professional) which makes it versatile and usable for both business and home.
Its small flats come from its very pronounced noise during operation and its slow digitization. It takes about 19 seconds to scan an A4 sheet at 300 dpi. You can only scan four slides at a time and it can take up to 20 minutes at maximum resolution. This will require patience to arm yourself with this scanner.
However, the result is unanimous. 6400 dpi resolution and color depth (up to 48-bit) satisfy users. The maximum format allowed is 8.5 x 11 “. Larger books are also supported.
In the end, the Epson Perfection V550 is distinguished by its performance, resolution quality and its many software that facilitates its use. However, its reduced scanning speed, lack of Wi-Fi connection and noise prevent us from placing it at the head of the section. Nevertheless, it remains one of the best scanners for photography.
Best High-End Scanners of 2020
Scanners in this range of more than 400 € offer you more technological options that aim to improve the performance and ergonomics of the machine.
Once again, Brother and Epson stand out. But at that price, these scanners will be more suitable for businesses.
The Brother ADS-2800W is a model superior to the ADS-1700W which makes the law in its range thanks to its performances and its ergonomics.
With its dimensions of 30.6 x 25.8 x 25 cm and 4.55 kg, it comes in an imposing format but still quite discreet with a worked design.
A small downside that users notice is the feeling of unfulfilled work felt when they use software and applications. These could be more intuitive. This requires a familiarization but does not detract from its versatility.
Connectivity level, several options are available to you. Among them, there is a USB port, an Ethernet and a Wi-Fi connection. The three possibilities allow you to reliably send your scanned documents by email, on a USB key or to a storage service like Cloud, Evernote or OneDrive.
Its touch screen and shortcuts show ergonomic use. The brand recommends scanning up to 3000 pages per day to preserve the machine. This ceiling can be reached since you can scan several sheets at the same time and in addition, with a speed of 30 pages per minute, it is fast enough.
The digitalization front and back is possible with a resolution of 600 to 1200 dpi. It is certainly less good than its alternative or another photo scanner but it still shows honorable performance.
For supported formats, you can insert A4 and smaller templates in different paper types, from thicker to traditional. Note that it has a charger that can accommodate 50 sheets.
Here is a scanner that is more suitable for an individual. Efficient and ergonomic, we appreciate its Wi-Fi and its many storage services. Discreet, it supports various formats and several types of paper asserting obviously its versatility. A real scanning tool!
With the V800, Epson increases the performance of its Perfection range even further. This flatbed scanner is dedicated to professional quality photography.
It is quite imposing with its dimensions of 50.3 x 30.8 x 15.2 cm, and on the scale, it amounts to 6.6 kg. Its design made of a glass plate inspires confidence and attracts attention.
From a connector point of view, it’s the USB 2.0 cable. (also serves as power supply), which makes the connection since it does not have Wi-Fi.
This model embeds two software packages: EsponScan and SilverFast. The first is more professional while the other is complex and difficult to install. Nevertheless, the SilverFast Ai Studio is a more efficient and professional version but also more expensive to buy (about 300 €). Both handle post-production touch-ups and also adjust colors, light, and contrast.
The lack of installation guide complicates its implementation but once configured, it has three modes (automatic, standard and professional) that increase its degree of versatility.
With this scanner, the manufacturer has improved speed since unlike the V550, scanning is fast. 12 slides can be scanned at a time in just 10 minutes. In the same way, it takes 6 seconds to get an A4 page in black and white, and about 12 seconds in color.
The V800 supports slides and print sizes up to A4, whether in portrait or landscape. The Auto Crop function and Digital ICE technologies are designed to correct dust, scratches, and fingerprints, and offer a high-quality paper photo scan. It runs at a maximum resolution of 6400 dpi with a color depth of 48 bits.
In summary, this scanner holds the road with its many technologies that preserve the quality of your document and reproduces it at a resolution of the most significant. It’s no wonder he is a specialist in the digitization of photos. In addition, it is faster than its ancestors and the presence of its two software will only satisfy you.
Brother DS-720D: With a fairly reasonable size and weight, this scanner scans files up to A4 at 600 x 600 dpi on both sides. It connects via a USB cable and works with many software programs. However, these have some incompatibilities when operating systems evolve. Also, its scan speed is extremely slow, so it is not included in our selection.
Epson Perfection V370: Attractively designed and easily transportable with its lightweight, this device is versatile in terms of performance and has a maximum resolution of 4800 x 4800 dpi. It is relatively quiet. Nevertheless, its scanning speed is quite slow, especially in high definition. Also, the interface is not intuitive, just as the software is not practical since they are poor in settings.
Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500: fast, this model has continued to be unanimous on the market since 2012. Initially designed for professionals, it has a number of interesting options (front/back printing, setup, auto-rotation documents, conversion to PDF, etc.) and many software (Adobe, Evernote, Google Drive or Share Point). Even so, the maximum resolution is not extremely high and the Wi-Fi connection can only be registered with one computer. In our opinion, its high price is not justified.
In conclusion, which scanner to choose?
We have a preference for the Brother ADS-1700W which appears as an intuitive and ergonomic device with multiple functions and full connectivity (like Wi-Fi). Its secure access makes it an excellent working tool that would go well within a company.
Cheaper, the Visioneer RoadWarrior 4D is an efficient scrolling scanner because in addition to its easy-to-store format, it presents practical software. Various shortcuts are also present to facilitate the task. Domestic use will be appropriate.
Finally, the Brother ADS-2800W requires a larger investment but this is justified by speed, compatibility, good connectivity, more storage services, as well as a discreet design demonstrating a certain versatility.
Why Trust Us?
Our team spends thousands of hours researching, analyzing and comparing products to find the best value for money. Also, our selection is not sponsored.
How did we choose?
Since the advent of free scan smartphone applications and the development of printers opening to scan files, scanners are not as popular as before.
As a result, models try to reinvent themselves and compete with each other. But before opening your wallet, you should take a look at these criteria that should help you in your choice:
- The type of scanner: Flat scanners, bulkier, integrate a glass plate on which the document is placed. Their image quality is their asset. Scrolling scanners work the same way as a fax machine and it is in terms of its options and formats that they stand out the most.
- The resolution: It is expressed in dpi. The higher the number, the better the image quality. Keep in mind that a file that has a high resolution is heavier to email or store. The ideal is therefore between 300 and 500 dpi. Most serious models, at the moment, offer at least 4000 dpi. The optical resolution is the resolution for which the scanner is designed while it may support the higher resolution ( resolution extrapolated ).
- Supported Formats: A4 is the most used. For scrolling scanners, however, it is very interesting to have a particular format adapted to driving licenses, identity cards, business cards, etc. While A3 scanners will be mostly flat, and they usually cost much more.
- Scanning Speed: This element is especially interesting for companies. At this level, what matters most is the option to automatically switch multiple sheets, which allows you to scan larger volumes faster.
- The software Suite: You must not only look at the compatibility with your device but also the price of licenses because some are expensive. Among the interesting software is Evernote, which exports scanned documents directly to Cloud. A PDF editor is also essential. Some editing functions are welcome, especially to correct a flawed scan. Finally, the OCR software converts a scanned document into a text file.
- Connectivity: Connectivity is particularly important in a professional context since Wi-Fi allows the scanner to function as a virtual fax for distributing documents. But this factor can drive up prices. However, for a wired USB model, export to a shared folder is an alternative to this type of connection.
- Additional Options: To scan multiple documents in a row, the Document Feeder will serve you greatly. In the same way, a touch screen and shortened buttons favor the ergonomics of the scanner. As for the design, it can improve its transport or limit its place on a workspace. Finally, double-sided support for scroll scanners with two optical sensors saves time and saves paper.
Taking these criteria into account, we identified a dozen or more models that were more interesting and that we looked at more deeply.
Thanks to the user feedback found on sales sites, blogs, channels, forums, and expert sites, we managed to establish our selection of the 6 best scanners of the moment.
